"Expressing a comparable opinion, Sheridan described elocution as 'the just and graceful management of the voice, countenance, and gesture of speaking."

With the influence of cell phones, social media, and "text talk", do you find this concept useful in your daily conversations?

  1. I think in order for Sheridan's theory to apply to our modern mediums of communication, we would have to refit the definitions of "voice, countenance, and gesture of speaking" for modernity and understand how some of those elements can be lost or foregone in modern contexts.

  2. I think that in todays modern era this is still relevant in formal settings, however when it comes to social media there is hardly any, if any, speaking that has to do with tone of voice and gestures, since everything is just words on a screen. I think that once people get to know each other in person, then maybe elocution can be picked up through online communication.
