QQC1

“Self improvement was open to anyone who could pay for it, and anyone, no matter what his or her natural endowments, could make some progress under Sophistic teaching.”

What was more important to the Sophists? That they share knowledge and teach or was their main priority to to make money?

  1. After reading some background information about the Sophists, I find myself questioning the honesty of their practice. The fact that their teachings were open to young impressionable people who could pay for it, makes it sound a little bit like a scam. At least in today's modern world, if there was a similar situation going on, I would definitely find myself hesitating before getting involved. Which also makes me wonder if the people during that time period were questioning the Sophists. Another factor that came across as a red flag, was the fact that many well known philosophers such as Plato, were outwardly discrediting Sophists. While I do like the fact that many of their teachings celebrated human potential, I also find myself questioning their morals.
