QQC 3

Quote:  “Indeed, they are more primitive than words, more natural where words are artificial, more universal where words are national, and more expressive of emotion than is the sophisticated language of words”

Question: Taking into the elocutionary movement idea that written word is inferior to spoken word, do you feel this is relevant to society today? Keeping in mind the influence of technology, social media, etc., do you think there was a shift in importance with the invention of these platforms?

  1. This is a great point to bring up. I feel our society has merged the ideas of speech and elocutionary style through social media and technology alike. We utilize our technology as a more or less extension of ourself, engrained with our daily lifestyles. Elocution still plays a major role in regard to the set up and delivery of our technology in today's age.

  2. Yes, I think this is very relevant today. There is a dominance of writing in online communication. But, we aren't expected to pronounce words when communicating in online spaces. Platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat are less focused on elocution than we are used to in our daily lives. Speech is becoming less relevant as we hardly experience each others voices through online platforms.
