QQC 2

Quote: "Quintilian wishes to call attention not just to the quantity of the orator's reading, but the sincerity with which he applies the ideas to life" This quote makes Quintilian seem lime a great teacher. It makes it sound like he didn't want his students to just regurgitate what they read but instead learn from what they are reading and find their own ides from that reading.

Question: Does this form of teaching work today?

  1. This is an extremely important form of teaching! The problem is that it simply is not used enough. Many curriculums focus on what information students can regurgitate and not how it is useful to us in our daily lives. For example, many people wish that they were taught more about how to do their taxes during high school. We aren't taught it because it is not a part of the curriculum that teachers must follow.

  2. I definitely agree with this method of teaching. I think one of the most effective ways to learn is through life experience. I would say that the majority of education is based off of memorization, which for me at least is definitely not useful, I cannot remember most of the curriculum I had to memorize in high school. After reading about Quintilian, it is clear that he believed education was something that needs to be deeply rooted in our daily lives and not just limited to the classroom.

  3. This form of teaching is very effective but unfortunately isn't used today in most class room settings. When you read something and relate it to your idea of life it shows that you have an understanding of the text. Rather than just reading and not thinking deep with the text. Then you find yourself studying for an exam, pass it, and all that you "learned" has been forgotten. So did you even learn anything?
